Academy Award-winning producer Jon Landau, who worked alongside director James Cameron on Titanic and the Avatar franchise, has died at the age of 63, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman announced in a statement obtained by CBS News Saturday (July 6) night.
"Jon was a visionary whose extraordinary talent and passion brought some of the most unforgettable stories to life on the big screen. His remarkable contributions to the film industry have left an indelible mark, and he will be profoundly missed. He was an iconic and successful producer yet an even better person and a true force of nature who inspired all around him," Bergman said.
Landau's cause of death wasn't publicly revealed as of Sunday (July 7) morning. Landau and Cameron's partnership on Titanic led to three Oscar nominations, including a best picture win, at the 1998 Academy Awards.
The duo went on to create some of the biggest blockbusters in American cinema, including Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water. Landau began his Hollywood career as a production manager in the 1980s before landing a producer role on Titanic, the first film to earn more than $1 million in global box-office earnings.
"I can't act and I can't compose and I can't do visual effects. I guess that's why I'm producing." Landau said while excepting the best picture Oscar with Cameron, one of 11 Academy Awards won by the film in 1998, via CBS News.
